Injection moulds are vital across numerous industries as they provide a reliable route to produce fast and precise parts at scale. However, when contaminants build up on their surfaces, they quickly become a liability, leading to costly manufacturing defects and quality issues. When was the last time you cleaned your injection moulds?

How cleaning can prevent part defects
From automotive and medical applications to housings, enclosures and even bottle caps, injection moulds are relied upon to produce precision parts. But if deposits from lubricating oils and residues from the gasses used are allowed to build up it could cause issues, as the two sides of the mould may not seal completely.
This lack of a perfect seal could lead to flash, which is when excess plastic leaks out of the cavity, or warping, discoloration or other surface imperfections. These issues can have serious implications in the quality produced and may lead to parts needing to be remade or rejected by the client.
An example being, we have a client that works in the automotive sector, and they found that the exhaust gasses from the injection process were getting trapped in the fine channels and internal chambers of the mould. Which meant, once these contaminants were allowed to build up, misshaped parts were being produced.
We were able to use a process of ultrasonic cleaning and the right chemistry to restore the moulds back to full working order and able to produce the required precision parts.

How cleaning can extend the life of your injection moulds
Whilst moulds that aren’t maintained can lead to product defects, there is an even more critical reason to prioritise maintenance, safety and downtime. If vents aren’t kept clear, then burning could occur and fires could be triggered. As well as there being a risk of off-gassing which could release toxic fumes and as mentioned earlier, rather than just the molten liquid leaking out of a mould, under pressure this could cause hot molten plastic to spray out – leading to potentially serious safety incidents as well as equipment failure.
